It’s now clear that heat meters must be replaced or recalibrated every 10 years. This is not new — but many participants are unaware of how strictly it’s being enforced.
We’ve seen several clients hit with repayment demands for failing to replace a meter after the 10-year mark — often unknowingly.

So when does the 10-year clock start?
This is where things get murky.
While Ofgem haven’t published a consistent position, they’ve said the 10-year deadline may be based on:
- The original calibration date
- The accreditation date
- Or the installation date
But in most cases we’ve seen, they use the accreditation date as the latest allowable point.
Our advice:
- Assume your accreditation date is the 10-year deadline
- Don’t leave it until the last minute
- Missing the deadline could cost you thousands in reclaimed payments
Next week, we’ll share 3 proven ways to cut costs and simplify the meter replacement process — including how to reduce the number of meters you need to replace.
